turn it on, turn it off
The first solo I ever created on myself, turn it on, turn it off, was driven by my wonderings about the human capacity to turn emotions on and off after experiencing an abrupt detachment in my life. I grew fascinated by quality, texture and timing that played with tension and release in different places of my body. As I allowed this question of the human capacity to move me, I became fascinated with self-mantras, internal dialogue, and the idea that I could allow the voice inside my head to direct my actions, questioning how much control I have over a given situation. Birthed from experiences of feeling small, broken and stuck, not being able to keep up with the fast paced world that surrounded me after relocating back to the US, turn it on, turn it off unapologetically takes up space physically and emotionally. This piece was the beginning of me developing a movement vocabulary that feels honest and reflective of my unique choreographic voice.
In this work we see a dancer, a woman, a human being, begin her search for alternative modes of understanding. We witness her remember, relive, and reclaim things she never got the chance to say, but on her terms and through the guidance of her body’s innate instinct. We watch as she turns the chaos of her experiences on and off as she takes pauses to check in and make sure she is still alive, still here.

“Burright’s turn it on, turn it off is a focused, modern solo of body-slapping, sounded breath and sinuous movement. She grimaces; trying out faces with her hands, as the soundtrack croons a tinny love song…”
